    California truly is a geographically diverse state. California contains the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the farmlands of the Central Valley, and the arid Mojave Desert of the south. The state is home to some of the world's most beautiful trees like the coast redwood, which is the tallest. The Giant Sequoia, which is the most massive of the trees and the bristlecone pine, which is the oldest. It is also home to the highest mountain, Mt. Whitney and lowest point in the lower 48 states, Death Valley.

    California is bordered to the north by Oregon, to the east by Nevada and Arizona, to the south by Mexico and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The state ranks 3rd in size after Alaska and Texas. The 3 major metropolitan areas along the California coast are the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the San Diego metropolitan area. The results of the 2010 United States Census rank Los Angeles with the largest population at over 3.7 million people. The other cities in the top 10 by population are San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, Oakland, Anaheim and Bakersfield.
