Land. Area, 49,108 square miles, including 1,731 square miles of water surface (30th state in size; 27th if Great Lakes area of 3,627 square miles is added). New York state is bordered on the northwest and north by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. New York is bordered on the east by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The state is bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. New York is bordered on the west by Pennsylvania, and Ontario.

Elevation. Highest, Mount Marcy, 5,344 feet, near Keene Valley; lowest, sea level; average, 1,000 feet.

Geographic Center. 6 miles southeast of Oneida.

New York City makes up over 40 % of the population of New York state. New York City has an estimated population of over 8.2 million as of 2012 which would make it the most populous city in the USA.

    New York has many state parks and 2 major forest preserves. Adirondack Park is approximately the size of the state of Vermont. It is the largest state park in the United States. Niagara Falls, on the Niagara River flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The Hudson is a 315 mile river that flows south through eastern New York. The source of the river is at Lake Tear of the Clouds on the slopes of Mount Marcy in the Adirondack Mountains.

    Lake George empties at the north end into Lake Champlain, whose northern end extends into Canada, where it drains into the Richelieu and then the Saint Lawrence Rivers. 4 of New York City's 5 boroughs are on 3 islands at the mouth of the Hudson River. The 3 islands are Manhattan Island, Staten Island, and Long Island.
